I was at the grand opening of The Doormen of New York exhibition, drink in hand and chatting away with a girlfriend while strolling around the art. There is no doubt, all the doormen were lovely with a stunning Caravaggio realism and intriguing stories to match, but despite my wing woman’s encouragement there were none I really wanted to take home. Then I looked up and there he was. Aloof and imposing with a mischievous expression that compelled me instantly to ask my friend if I’d been up to anything naughty before he caught me. Concluding I probably hadn’t, we walked on to the next doorman but Sabro made his intentions known. His eyes locked on me wherever I went in the room, his expression equally one of loving just looking at me to once again asking me what trouble I’d been up to. And so our love story continues to be a happy one and he now lives with me, sitting in the entrance at the top of the stairs. He watches all who come and go and silently judges my visitors because like me, he is mischievous like that. I had your email on my phone up for a sec and then I started reading the first page of the script as I was running around but had to sit down since I couldn’t put it down till the end... This is such a brilliant idea and a very special, unique subject. It’s so very well & beautifully captured by you and David in your screenplay. I completely get it and feel it because it is a very Manhattan feel/experience/life. I had doormen in every building and made friends with each of them and loved their character and quirks and details... they always looked after me and offered a wise or smartass or clever conversation and figured me out and we became familiar as they would use as a term family.... they give a soul to the building as a guardian, gate keeper, like you said a therapist and a voice. They are part of the building in a way a parent is to a child. This film will be such a beautiful extension of your Doormen of New York portraits, which I find deeply touching every time. The subject intrigued me yet I just never managed to see it first hand. After having collected a number of fabulous paintings I had decided that I wanted an extraordinary photograph to add to my collection. I had no idea what subject, all I knew was that it had to be amazing. I’d been looking on and off for ages – art has to pick you, not the other way around, and nothing had called out. That is, until I was reminded about the Doormen of New York series. I met Alina, and was so inspired to hear first hand the stories and the inspiration for this series. Her energy is extraordinary. I then saw ‘Sabro’ artwork from this collection at another art collector’s house – whilst incredible, that portrait was not for me. Like love at first sight, there could only be one. And when I went through the catalogue of available works, there he was -Lirim. Lirim: You chose me, despite your silence. Tall, brooding, distant, you would not make eye contact. Yet pervading from you is such incredible strength, thought, calmness and peace. Seductive and protective is what you are. And you chose me. I can talk technicalities about the quality of the photograph, the unique frame, but listening to Alina talk about each of her Doormen, you can tell that the inspiration comes from a passion of NYC and a deep respect for the Doormen who help make things work in that bustling city. For what it is worth, I have had Lirim hanging in my home now for over 6 months, and yet I continue to walk into my home each night willing him to make eye contact, knowing that he has been waiting for me all day, protecting my home.
